Origin Of The Joker
Past
For most, the past can hurt. But for others, it can hurt more then most. It's not right for a young boy to wake up every morning to the fear that day might hold. Or go to sleep every night, listening to his parents argue violently. After the argument hearing the sound of his mother crying herself to sleep as his dear old dad drank himself into a coma. The worst part of it all for the young buy was living that fear of an overly abusive father who punched him in the face every chance he got. Giving his son not only visible scars, but emotional scars that will be on the boarder of that boys mind forever. Then when the young boy left he was known as a freak because of the scars he had on his face. He became an outcast, a monster, never fitting in to regular society.
Past Romance
Being an engineer really never brings in enough money to support a wife, let alone supporting a pregnant wife. That was out of the question. The only sensible thing to do is quit your factory job and shoot for bigger dreams. When your a funny guy you should try something that will exercise that part of you. So a stand up comedian is the way to go. But when you quit your engineering job and nobody will hire you as a comedian, you're out of luck. Wifey then starts gambling to try to get some money in the house. She begins to form a habit and gets in with the sharks... and they carved her face up terribly. With no money for surgeries she is left with horrible scars. A caring husband would want his wife to know that he didn't care about the scars. She had looked through his and he was willing to look past hers. Taking a razor the husband carved more scars into his own face. But she couldn't stand the sight of him now. So she leaves her husband behind.
Criminal Life
With no one to worry about, a free man can do whatever he wants. Stealing had taken place almost all his life, so as an adult it came easy. Robbing banks was the first step, but when you have witness, you need to keep them quiet. So murder could solve that, but then you continue. With every day that pasts, they get even worse than the last, leaving gruesome and horrifying scenes all over the city. You become a maniac.
Arkham
Hearing that your ex-wife and unborn child died in an accident can drive any man insane. But when you've had a rough past, something like that can just make a man snap! So to hide the glimpses of the past, a person that's already having a mental break down, might paint their face and change there looks completely. Everyone calls that person a joker or a clown...so why not prove them right and become it. Why the hell not? You are what the world makes you out to be... But then... they decide to pronounce a person crazy, and send then to Arkham Asylum. And if you grew up in any neighborhood in Gotham, The name sends chills up your spine. Arkham is Gotham's nut house. It's where they keep all the wackos and all the head cases gathered from Gotham's most notorious slums. Spending time in Arkham can change a person.

In the Dark Knight 'Rises' version, I've noticed that the Joker lied multiple stories about how he got his scars.
It's a safe bet he doesn't have a clue about his past. In reality, I do believe some people cover up themselves with lie because the truth always hurts.

Ok Ok... You really wanna know the truth on how I got my scars? I had a sister. She was a quiet girl, always kept to herself. My father was a detective and he was investigating a series of murders. He caught an addiction to the brutal killings. His life revolved around an unknown psychopath. Well... the psychopath decided that he wasn't going to wait for dear old dad to find him so he paid dad a little visit. He came to our house. He killed poor mother first. Never even gave her a chance really. Then he tied me and my father to chairs. He goes to the kitchen and grabs mothers really big kitchen knife. He grabs my sister by the hair and drags her to us. He held the knife firmly against her throat, smiling while he did it. He started asking her alot of questions,... her favorite color, my favorite color, her lucky number, my lucky number. A whole lot of senseless questions. Then he asked her if anyone else was in the house. He warned her not to lie,... told her it would cost me if she didn't tell the truth. So... what does she do? She lies. Turns out my sister's boyfriend was hiding in the closet, He had watched him come in and never leave. The psychopath throws my sister to the ground and asked me if I was mad at her. When I didn't answer he carved this Into my face. My sister and father screamed in horror. He said that a smile was the best way to lie... and he said that when one person lies the people they care about most get hurt. I've learned one thing that night the hard way... he was a man of his word! Now tell me I'm lying?

I never heard the joker's story written out before. It's definitely given me a lot of food for thought. Thank you so much for posting this.

This is quite fascinating, indeed. I think, in all honesty, we all have our scars.
It's just.. Some choose to cover them up, and wear their.. Masks, let's say.
A mask of normalcy. The mask I fear the most.
Excellent, Jack. Excellent. Bravo.

Underneath my mask you'll only find layers of paint. =p

This will look good in animated flash. Awesome Stuff! Speaking of make-up, in special occasions I do 'powder my nose' with Scarface.
